Eckhart, with its roots in Rotterdam, was founded in 1842 by the Eckhart family as a factory for furniture and millwork. For almost a century, Eckhart was based in Rotterdam in various locations and slowly expanded and modernized its business. The company worked on a wide range of projects, from home and office interiors to ship interiors and furniture production. Clients included a variety of large companies and important families in the region, extending all the way to the Royal Household of The Netherlands. Eckhart worked on the interiors of the royal palaces Noordeinde and Soestdijk, among others.

In 1886, the company built a new building designed by Muysken and Van Dam at the intersection between the Oude Havenkade and the Gelderse Kade, consisting of houses with a plinth of stores. The central store was occupied by Eckhart until 1935. Eckhart then moved to a larger building on the Diergaardelaan.

During the start of World War II, a major part of the city of Rotterdam was bombed in an air raid. The Eckhart offices and archives in the building by Muysken and Van Dam and Diergaardelaan were among the buildings that were destroyed and Eckhart swiftly acquired a new location in the Hoboken area, designed by Rotterdam architect Van Ravesteijn. The building was used until 1948, when Eckhart moved to the prestigious Noordeinde in The Hague.

In the period until its maritime launch in 1959, Eckhart was involved in the realization of the various interiors in the SS Rotterdam, the largest passenger vessel ever built in The Netherlands.

In the year 1953, Eckhart moved back to Rotterdam and established its new base at the post-war Lijnbaan. To better serve its ever-expanding list of clients, Eckhart moved on to the even more prestigious Weena in the heart of the downtown commercial business district. There it has continued to grow and expand on the corner of the Weena and the Karel Doormanstraat.

In 2009, Eckhart opened a second showroom at the Noordeinde in The Hague: the Eckhart Gallery. The Eckhart Gallery presents fine art photography in combination with designer classics.
